Possible problems
I have installed Dialang but it will not start
If the software fails to start, it may be possible that the version of Java installed on your computer is not compatible with Dialang. In this case, please download the appropriate version of Java (zip file) from the following address:
http://www.lancs.ac.uk/researchenterprise/dialang/sun_jre_installer.zip
Once you have downloaded the zip file, extract and execute the “exe” file it contains. This will install the appropriate version of Java on your computer, enabling you to run the Dialang software.
Please note that installing this version of Java will not have any negative impact on your computer.
Dialang starts but then displays “Network error”
If Dialang displays the message “Network error”, it may be possible that your computer’s firewall is blocking the software’s attempt to connect to the Internet. The reason why the software tries to connect to the Internet is because it needs to fetch the questions for the tests from the Dialang server.
You can solve this problem by allowing an exception in your firewall. In order do to so, follow these steps:
- Go to your Start Menu (usually bottom-left corner of your screen) and click on “Control Panel”.
- In the Control Panel, double-click on the “Windows Firewall” icon.
- In the “Windows Firewall” window that just opened, select the “Exceptions” tab, and click on the “Add Program…” button.
- Select “Dialang” in the list of programs and click the “Ok” button.
- Close the “Windows Firewall” window by clicking the “Ok” button.
- Double-click on the “Dialang” icon on your computer’s Desktop.
- Dialang should now be working correctly. (Otherwise, please contact us at the following address: emp@ulb.ac.be).
